What is TMJ?

TMJ refers to temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It causes pain in your joints and muscles that control your jaw movement. The Temporomandibular joint is responsible for connecting your jawbone (mandible) to your skull. It is basically a disease-causing difficulty in the movements of your jaw. According to a survey, 5% to 12% of the population suffers from this disease.

TMJ can be diagnosed by various symptoms it causes, so look for them carefully.  Symptoms of TMJ are

  • Pain in jaw
  • Difficulty in opening and closing your mouth
  • Pain around the ears
  • Difficulty and pain while chewing anything
  • Facial pain
  • Pain in temporomandibular joints
  • Bruxism
  • The Pain of neck, shoulder and headache is also common

Causes of TMJ can be arthritis, jaw injury, damage of temporomandibular joints or disc dislocation due to various factors.

Can TMJ go away on its own?

Yes, in most cases it is observed TMJ go on its own. The pain and discomfort caused by TMJ disorder are temporary but recurring. TMJ can usually be treated with self-care and other non-surgical treatments. There are many exercises effective in easing TMJ symptoms. If all the measures applied failed then the last option is typically surgery based.

Is TMJ curable?

TMJ is difficult to diagnose and treat as the exact reason for it is unknown. As mentioned already pain of TMJ is recurring, so it is more correct to say it is not curable but treatable. Cure of TMJ is not yet known but there are treatments possible to reduce pain, discomfort and other symptoms.

Is TMJ painful?
